There has been a shopping bag of mixed reactions to the news revealed by the Ross Gazette last week at plans for Tesco to build a new supermarket and petrol station in Ross. Comments from readers, which were posted on our website and facebook page, ranged from approval to outright rejection. 'Doesn't Ross have enough supermarkets,' was the view of several:
"There are many great small shops in Ross – use them and say no thanks to Tesco," Paul, Llangrove. Margaret from Ross said: "I am very concerned for the independent traders in the Town centre with the ever increasing car parking charges and Traffic Wardens adding to their problems." Mrs Upton from Ross added: "I feel allowing Tesco to come to Ross would be a serious mistake, it would be detrimental to the town as a whole and seriously compromise the viability of the high street.
Meanwhile, John, Ross said: "The last thing Ross needs is another supermarket. There's a great variety of small local shops in Ross, and for everything else, there's a massive Morrisons and a smaller Sainsbury's. A Tesco store will do nothing but increase traffic congestion and blight the town. Like all supermarkets, Tesco will hoover money out of the local economy and put very little back in.
"Does it really benefit the local economy that much?" asked Phil from Ross. "It just gives people twice as many reasons to avoid shopping in (the dying) town."
Those were just some of the dissenters. Some of those wholly in approval at the plans included:
"Fantastic," said Lisa Scotford. "Morrisons is so stressful, the parking, the queues, all the huffing and puffing. I would much prefer for Sainsbury's to have a larger store, but Tesco will do! Creating jobs, another bonus, more people coming over to Ross to shop, another positive, I am sure from time to time these folk would have a little wander around the town and enjoy our fantastic range of independent shops. I think it could be the first step on the ladder to recovery for this lovely little town. And another supported added: "Having tried for 20 minutes this morning @ 9am and observed the chaos in Morrisons car park and store it leaves me in no doubt that we desperately need the option of another supermarket. Tesco cannot come soon enough for me.
Cheryl Evans thought it was a good idea: "I've lost count of the amount of times I've tried to shop in Morrisons and it's been packed with no car parking spaces left, so I have gone elsewhere instead, it would be good to have a second choice instead of having to travel to Hereford or Gloucester.
And so the trolley wars continue to rumble in the aisles. Keep your views coming in.
