Madam, There may still be a few months to go before 5th November but I have no doubt that the majority of us hard working voters would sympathise with a modern day Guy Fawkes.

I, like many, have been annoyed by the recent revelations relating to how elected representatives have used our money. It is too easy to then tar all MPs with the same brush and to forget that many are honest and work very hard for their constituents. Perhaps honest members already elected and also those who are considering  representing the public in future should shout louder and more often, take for example Philip Dunne, Tory MP for Ludlow, who has claimed no expenses for his second home.

It was therefore reassuring to see Jesse Norman's note on the letters page last week welcoming a tough line being taken on these so called 'expenses'. Both these politicians have had successful business careers and choose to represent us for the right reasons and not for personal gain.

I am very happy for my elected representative to be well rewarded for carrying out duties to a high standard but those that have 'behaved very badly' as Jesse puts it, have created this hopeless mess.

Perhaps Jesse's final sentence should become Parliament's new motto: 'It would be an inestimable privilege to me simply to be elected'
