75 teams challenged each other in this year's Sue Parry Six-a-Side Football Tournament on Sunday, July 18th and, after eight games, the newly formed Ross Juniors were the proud runners-up to Womelow Wizards.
Ross kicked off with a 3-0 victory over Mammatt FC. The next two group games were won, 1-0 and 2-0, against Phoenix and Heskeys Heroes respectively, with Luke Gray, Will Barker and Leighton Hall hitting the goal trail.
With nine points from a possible nine points the team was into the last 16. Ross Juniors took on Ratty's Rejects and won 1-0, Rob McAfee nodded in the winning goal.
In the quarter final, Ross Juniors were against GL United. At halftime with the scores 0-0, manager Matt Hall decided to make a double substitution with himself and Matt Davies. Matty Hall scored immediately then Matt Davies added the second with a long range effort that was greatly helped by the goalkeeper's Rob Green impression.
Ross Juniors were against Holme Lacy in the semi-final. After a tight encounter and the game ending 0-0, the game went into penalties. Carl Salmon produced a great save diving to his left to give Ross Juniors the upper hand. After successful penalties for Will Barker and Leighton Hall, it was down to Matt Davies to secure victory, but Matt dragged his penalty wide.
In sudden death, Rob McAfee scored the fourth penalty for Ross, and as the Holme Lacy player blazed over the post, Ross won through to the final.
Ross started strongly and the Wormelow keeper had to be at his best to deny Rob McAfee and Matt Davies. After creating some very good early chances Ross was undone by a long ball, and in the eighth game of the tournament finally conceded, despite Tom Burford's best efforts to get a block in.
Then a long punt upfield found its way to a Wormelow forward who at the second attempt put the ball past Carl to make it 2-0. Ross never gave up but in the end had to make do with runners up medals. The player of the tournament was Will Barker for three assists and one goal and his tireless work.
The event, celebrating its 10th anniversary, was held at Hereford Leisure Centre, organised by the Sue Parry Fundraising Team and St Michael's Hospice.
