Madam, re the picture of the road signs at Gorsley, Ross Gazette, March 14th
You could have said more about the Gorsley road-works managing to miss the school altogether when we all thought that they were for the benefit of the children. It seems that by now the costs are very likely to be well past a quarter of a million pounds.
What needs to be explained is that we now have this sort of enterprise being managed directly by a contractor. Then, that his employees are loyal to him and not to the general public - if they want to get on, that is. Then, that he will naturally want things to grow where they are showing a profit. But we must not expect anybody to start unnecessarily fixing pot-holes if there is no money in it.
So good government usually requires some form of competent supervision, acting independently and only in the public interest to stop this sort of thing getting out of hand. But this is what seems to be lacking.
K Horne, Gorsley
