MADAM, As you are aware there is more to libraries than just borrowing books. College students and senior school children do homework while waiting for transport home, when Universal Credit becomes national all new applications will have to be done on line – there are lots of homes which haven't got access to the internet, no signal or can't afford the connection.
More than books are available, DVDs, games, sheet music, sets of books for reading clubs, sets of plays for drama groups, exhibition space and notice boards.
One service provided by the Library that has not been mentioned at all is the Delivered Service. This service was quietly achieved during the last Council spending review two years ago as a replacement for the travelling library service.
There are criteria for this service – lack of access to personal /public transport service, distance from a Static library, having a registered Carer or in receipt of other Social services or GP's recommendation. Users receive a bag of books, from categories of their choice every six weeks. I have up to 16, mostly non-fiction, often with 'Our Librarians 'choice tucked in with a message to 'try this.' As far as I know there are 200 + Users together with many Care Homes. For us this service keeps our minds active and gives us plenty of interesting topics to discuss with visitors

Madam, My wife and I are newcomers to Ross, attracted by the individualistic feel of the town, the independent shops (we try to ignore the empty windows) and the lack of identikit chain stores. No sooner do we arrive then there are rumours of the swimming pool closing, the police station closing and now a threat brewing over the library. Some individualistic thinking is going to be required.
One idea of pooling budgets could be to site the police station in the library building. There should be enough space. There could be other county services that could share the resource. Libraries are essential to the well-being of a large community so in tough times why not share and share alike.

MADAM, Who are these philistines who wish to close our libraries. It is one of the great assets of this town.
