Dear Editor,

I have received quite a lot of emails and phone calls asking about the significance of the Silent Soldiers and I wondered if you would be kind enough to tell everyone what they mean.

These Soldiers represent the nearly 1.1 million British and Empire Service Men & Women who were killed in WW1 before the guns finally fell silent on the 11th Day of November 1918 at the 11th hour. After the Surrey Branch of the RBL came up with the idea it has been taken on board nationally. The Silent Solders can be seen in all cities, towns and many villages throughout the country. There are many others now producing them, from small figurines right up to large silhouettes.

However, the ones in and around Ross have all been sponsored by local businesses or individuals such as Lt.Col and Mrs Sands who are members of the Ross-on-Wye Branch.

Margaret Jones,

Ross-on-Wye & District Royal British Legion.
