A host of top athletes, including a number who have competed for great Britain, as well as novices raced in the Scott Makani Ross on Wye Sprint Triathlon on June 13th.
Athletes swam 750m in Drummonds Dub Lake, cycled 20k and ran 5k around the lake complex. The course was very challenging with an undulating bike route and hilly run. The two lap bike route went along the rolling hills of Bromash and Linton before the ascent into Crow Hill.
The winner was Warren Hulsen, who has competed for the Great Britain age group team in long distance triathlons. Hulsen had a good swim and left the water in second place. He soon took the lead on the bike and held on to his position throughout the run to take the win comfortably in 1.03.42.
The first placed veteran was Martyn Green from Thornbury Running Club who posted the fastest run time of the day and finished second overall in a time of 1.04.26.
The winner of the women's race was Helen Russell, who races for Tri-UK triathlon team and is this year's Herefordshire and Worcestershire Sports Partnership Female Sports Personality of the Year. Russell had a decent swim and was second woman out of the lake. She quickly mounted her bike, overtook the first placed woman on the first ascent and held onto her lead in the run. Russell posted the fastest female bike and run split of the day to take the overall victory comfortably in 1.10.15.
Second placed woman was Forest of Dean athlete, Aly Rowell who has represented Great Britain in modern pentathlon and was competing in her second triathlon.
First female veteran was Helen Wainwright, who also competes for Tri-UK.
