Madam, did you think the early Victorian towns of the south coast had disappeared from the horizon? No the Glenwood Hotel in Margate is still up and running and surviving in the year 2009.

I have been lucky enough to have just had a five day holiday with coach company. Margate is a thriving, vibrant seaside coast on the Isle of Thanet. Funfairs and gambling machines still exist there along with candy floss and stripey rock, also dare I say a 'Pole Dancing Club' where, indeed the famous Katie Price is due to appear shortly.

A little bus takes you to the town's Cecil Square a frequent bus service. The food in the hotel was delicious served by an Irish waitress called Bridget who greeted the guests with 'top of the morning' to you while serving scrambled egg and bacon.

I was up early on Wednesday and took the ferry from Dover to Calais which was extremely busy. I visited Bruge market which had flowers, fish and other local produce. I passed by fields of cattle and crops which reminded me of my education at the Convent des Ursulines from 1957 - 1959 in Belgium when my late father Major Mirylees was stationed in Cologne.
