Ross ladies captain Loz Stephens is smiling broadly after her team convincingly won their last two matches. On Saturday, October 22nd they were playing at home to Lydney. Ross started strongly and impressive attacks came from Kate Cameron and Pauline Hemingway. However, the Lydney defence worked hard to prevent these attacks making any mark.
With such a forceful beginning, Ross became complacent and a lucky break from the Lydney attack slipped passed the Ross defence and took Lydney 1-0 up. Undeterred, Ross came back fighting. Gill Badham and Clare Vines were a force to be reckoned with in defence.
Ross continued to demonstrate skilful play, notably from Loz Stephens, Vanessa Ball and Rebecca Heyes and the Ross attack utilised the advantage created with Louise Cross scoring to equalise at 1-1.
Within minutes, Ross were again pressuring the opposition and were awarded a short corner from which Ball scored an outstanding goal. This took the half time score to 2-1.
Returning to the pitch Ross were determined to capitalise on their strong opening. Continual pressure on the opposition resulted in a well deserved goal when Heyes set up Cross to score her second of the match.
Shortly afterwards, Hemingway was able to add one more as she impressively converted a short corner to take the final score to 4-1. Clare Vines was awarded The Wye Valley Warfare laserops.co.uk player of the match.
Determined to continue their winning streak, Ross Ladies next match saw them play away to Gloucester Badgers on Saturday, November 5th. The pace of the game was fast and there was some excellent and skilful playmaking from the outset. Kim Sambrook and newcomer Rosie Caulfield were a formidable pair in defence meaning that goalkeeper Becky Preest had little contact with the ball. However, the few attempts made on goal were convincingly defended by the Ross keeper. Such strong defence, directed by Loz Stephens, served to perpetuate the confidence of the Ross midfield and attack allowing them many opportunities to drive the ball forward. Angela Wesley and Amy Bowen were impressive on the left, skilfully playing the ball up the field and setting up this seasons current top scorer, Pauline Hemingway, to score. Liese Brady, Liz Ellis and Clare Vines outstanding in midfield. However, Ross were unable to make any further impression and the half time score remained at 1-0.
In the second half, creative play by Stephens and Vannessa Ball opened space and allowed Katie Williams to score her second goal of the match. Unfortunately, the skill of the Badgers keeper saw several further attempts on goal be unsuccessful. However, a short corner saw another outstanding goal from Ball which the keeper had little chance to save. This took the final score to 3-0 and the Wye Valley Warfare laserops.co.uk player of the match was awarded to Katie Williams for her impressive and quick paced play down the right wing. Training takes place on Tuesday evenings 8-9pm at Monmouth Boys School Astroturf. Any new players will be warmly welcomed.
