THE Phoenix Theatre is staging the UK premiere of 'Joyful Noise'. A comedy about Handel's attempt to get the Messiah performed in London in the 18th century, it has a distinctive local twist.
The then Bishop of Hereford, who was also the father of the vicar of Ross-on-Wye, opposed its performance on the grounds that a work based on the scriptures was 'sacrilegious'.
Joyful Noise is written by the American playwright Tim Slover. With over 30 scenes, a colourful George II, two feuding divas and set against the background of Handel's inspiring music, it will be a production not to miss!
The play, performed by the resident Phoenix Theatre Company, runs from Friday 30th April until Saturday 8th May.
Tickets at £7.50 are obtainable from the theatre box office on 01989 564570, the Heritage Centre on 01432 260675 or book online at http://www.phoenix-theatre.org.uk">www.phoenix-theatre.org.uk
