Dear Editor,

As secretary to the PCC of St. Tysilio’s Church in Sellack, I had occasion to visit the church on Sunday evening, and whilst walking up the path through the churchyard, noticed something glinting in the sunlight. I went over to investigate and, to my absolute horror and disgust, discovered that it was a used portable barbecue, which had just been thrown over the wall into the churchyard.

It was a warm sunny day and there had been a lot of people picnicking down at the river, so obviously someone had decided they didn’t want to get their car dirty by taking their used barbecue home – much easier just to toss it over the wall and hope someone else would clear it up. The barbecue, whilst not hot, was warm and had landed upside down scattering ash on the tinder dry grass in the churchyard.

To add insult to injury, there were cars parked on the side of the lane all the way to the top, one of which was parked so badly, that other cars were struggling to get past. Had we needed to call a fire engine, it would not have been able to get down the lane.

Please, can I through your column, ask people to consider others when they come to visit our beautiful part of the world – park neatly and take your rubbish home. Please leave no trace.
