DOZENS of racing fans flocked to Venetia Williams' stables at King's
Caple, just outside Ross, on Sunday, to toast the success of Mon Mome.
Although many of them had not backed the 100-1 outsider there were
still plenty of people ready to toast Venetia who has saddled 13 runners in the National in her 14-year career as a trainer. Until Saturday the 10th
place recorded by Mon Mome last year was the best result she had
achieved. Staff, family and friends had already spent Saturday evening celebrating the victory at the Loughpool. There was standing room only in the pub and when the winning jockey Liam Treadwell arrived, still wearing
his race silks, the crowd erupted with cheers and wolf whistles. Liam, aged
23, has been riding for Miss Williams for six years but only got into Mon
Mome's saddle when stable-mate Aidan Coleman decided to ride Stan. Mingling with the people at Miss William's stables was Robin However as he is not a betting man he was not celebrating a bumper pay out. While most bookies had a Grand National bonanza from the outsider's win, Ladbrokes in Ross saw a string of loyal supporters backing the horse, with many placing each-way bets for £5 despite the odds of 100/1.
This was the first time such a long shot had won since Foinavon in 1967.
National winner Mon Mome will be paraded at Hereford Racecourse's fixture
on Wednesday, April 8th. This will take place in the parade ring and in front of the grandstand between 3.45pm and 4pm.
