Peter Lygo, a veteran of 3 Para in the Falklands War, was a comrade of Tim Jenkins from Ross-on-Wye, who was killed in action in June 1982.
On the 20th anniversary of the end of the Falklands War (2002), Peter visited Mount Longdon, where Tim and other Paras were killed during the last few hours of the war. Whilst there he collected a piece of stone as a memorial to remember all his comrades who never came home.
Peter has very generously donated his piece of stone to Ross-on-Wye Royal British Legion to be mounted and placed in the Prospect Gardens next to the Korean Memorial, as a lasting memorial to all those brave men of 1982 - especially remembering local men, Private Tim Jenkins of 3 Para, Guardsmen Gareth Griffiths and Colin Parsons of the Welsh Guards, who were lost when RMS Sir Galahad was bombed.
RBL Committee Member Elaine Roberts visited Peter recently to collect the stone which will be taken to Ursells on Cantilupe Road, who will mount it and add a suitable plaque. Elaine said: “Thank you Peter. It is such a generous gift to the town and we know how hard it was for you to part with it, but you can be assured that we will we look after this wonderful, unique memorial, on your behalf.”
The stone will be dedicated on November 8th at 12.00pm in the Prospect Gardens, when the RBL hold their annual Korean and Chelsea Pensioners Acts of Remembrance.
From this year, the Falklands Act of Remembrance will be added to this event - always the last Thursday before Remembrance Sunday.
“We Will Remember Them All - no matter how long or short a time it is since they sacrificed themselves for us and for others,” Elaine added.
