MADAM, I am writing to you because I think something desperately needs to be done about the litter problem in Ross-on-Wye.

Every week on my day off from working as a bakery assistant at The Golden Crust bakery in town, I am out and about, voluntarily collecting and recycling rubbish, often collecting a minimum of 12 carrier bags a week.

The rubbish that collects in the stream from Morrisons to the Rowing club is phenomenal – I have found supermarket trollies, china, items of clothing, and numerous tins, bottles and plastics, most of which can be recycled.

Most of the clearing up is needed away from the town centre, near the river and many of these items are a danger to wildlife as well as leaving the area, frequented daily by tourists, looking an eyesore.

Often and frustratingly, the rubbish is often discarded close to a litter bin!

I hope you can draw attention to this so that we can try to clean up our act and feel proud of living in such an otherwise beautiful town.

Wayne Grindle, Ross
