Every year the elderly, or disabled, who find it difficult to go out for a drive in the countryside, look forward to the Ross-on-Wye Action Bus collecting them for a monthly trip.

The passengers all find it difficult to get out by themselves and for some it is their only outing.

Rosemary Rigby, President of the Ross Action Bus committee has been organising the scheme for many years. She is extremely worried that this year, for the first time, she will have to let people down and cancel journeys.

She is desperate for a volunteer, or more than one, to act as a companion to the passengers. She told the Ross Gazette:?“The companions don’t need any particular experience or skills. There is a lift into the bus and there is a regular driver, what we need is someone who can be friendly and welcoming and help the passengers on and off the bus, and organise a cup of tea at a suitable place such as a garden centre.”

Rosemary told the Gazette that what is needed is common sense and kindness.

The trips are organised on the second and fourth Thursday of each month between March and December, so the first one of the year will be on March 10th.

A companion is also needed for the trips on the third Sunday of each month. Volunteering for the Ross Action Bus would be a great opportunity for anyone new to the area to make friends and discover interesting places.

It is a simple scheme but it works, said Rosemary. If you can help keep it working, please contact her on 01981 540477.
