The 10th anniversary of the Rotary Club “Walk The Wye” event, which is taking place on May 13th, is attracting considerable interest. Over 350 walkers are expected to take part in the event, which will again be raising funds for the breast cancer research team at the Velindre Cancer Centre, Cardiff.

Previous Rotary Club sponsored walks in support of breast cancer research have raised a total of over £89,000, and it is hoped to take the total past the £100,000 figure this year.

Walkers will meet at Monmouth Show Ground and buses will take them to the start of their chosen walk. They will then walk back to the Show Ground on the footpaths along the Wye Valley.

There are six walks to choose from, along the banks of the River Wye, starting at Chepstow, Tintern, Bigsweir, Redbrook, Symonds Yat or Lower Lydbrook, plus a Wye Valley View walk, away from the river. There are distances to suit everybody, from 2 miles up to 15 miles. The Wye Valley Views walk will take walkers up to several vantage points above Monmouth, and provide them with stunning views over Monmouth and the Wye valley, to the Welsh hills beyond.

The entry fee for this year’s walk is just £5. (Includes free parking at Monmouth Show Ground and free buses to take walkers to the start of their chosen walk)

Rotarian President, Sandra Davey, commented “The Rotary Clubs of Monmouth, Chepstow and Ross-on-Wye believe that research into a cure for breast cancer is a very worthy cause to support. Every year, thousands of women, and some men, are diagnosed with breast cancer. Almost everybody knows somebody who has been affected by breast cancer, either directly or through a relative or friend or work colleague. Survival rates are improving but much more research is needed to ultimately defeat it.
