Weir End House care home in Ross-on-Wye has been rated as ‘good’ for the quality of its care by the independent watchdog.

In its latest report, the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which regulates health and care services, praised the home for the positive relationships the people they support have with staff, supporting people to pursue their interests, and its Your Voice meetings.

The residents spoke highly of the staff to inspectors. One resident said staff were “good at looking after me”, and someone else said: “I love it here. The best things are the good food and the staff”. A fitness instructor, who works alongside the residents said: “The staff are fantastic. They have a real understanding of people’s complex needs and how to support them.”

The care and support at Weir End House is personalised to meet every individual’s needs. The CQC said: “Relatives we spoke with told us that staff knew people well”. A music therapist, who works with residents, said that “there is an effort to understand each individual… I have seen good practice in terms of tailoring support to the changing needs of the individual”.

Residents are supported to pursue their own interests, such as shopping in the nearby town. Staff also arranged for a fitness company to visit the home and offer sessions in activities such as yoga, tai chi and netball. A fitness instructor told inspectors that the “staff are excellent at motivating and encouraging people to try new things.”

Residents have the opportunity to attend monthly ‘Your Voice’ meetings, where they can raise any comments or ideas they have. A recent ‘Your Voice’ meeting resulted in a garden party being arranged for residents.

Weir End House is located in Glewstone, Ross-on-Wye, in Herefordshire, and is managed by Craegmoor, part of the world famous Priory Group. The home provides support for individuals who have learning disabilities, mental health problems, autism and behaviours that challenge.

Kirsty Priest, Acting Service Manager, said: “I am proud of our staff and the people we support. We pride ourselves on enabling our residents to do the things they enjoy, so I am pleased that the individualised approach to the support we offer has been praised by the CQC.”

Sarah Hughes, CEO of Craegmoor, said: “This is a great report and it is a credit to everyone who works at Weir End House. I hope that the people they support continue to enjoy living at the home.”
