MADAM, Last week's production of 'Amadeus' at the Phoenix Theatre was a triumph for all those concerned. The play deals with the opposing characters of Salieri, guardian of old order privileges and Mozart, whose musical ambition was limitless. The contract in personalities was stark and vivid and so well portrayed by the principal actors, Robin Haig and Daniel Lander. Robin's Salieri was a tour-de-force – he had an enormous amount to learn and his performance was flawless. Daniel Lander was equally impressive. He clearly expressed Mozart's exuberance by voice, expression and joyous movment (one of the joys of such an intimate theatre).
Brian Jackson's production portrayed these interactions so well and other roles were finely portrayed. The two 'gossips' splendidly lightened the tone.
For those of you who saw the production, my words are superfluous. To those who did not, no words of mine can adequately express the enjoyment we experienced. But I say this to record that last week one of the jewels in the crown of Ross shone that little bit more brightly.
Mr R A Hales, Ross
