MADAM, On Monday, August 4th we will be commemorating the beginning of WW1 with a two minute SILENCE in the Market Place. We are sure that all your readers are aware of the great sacrifices which were made during this terrible war. Over the past year we have been researching all the names on the War Memorial and found that most of these men were born here in Ross-On-Wye. We have been able to trace many of their relatives who still live in the area but this will be an ongoing project over the next four years. Together with the help of the Ross Gazette, and students from John Kyrle High School we have created a lasting record of everything we have found. There is a Roll of Honour on the Royal British Legion and Ross Remembers websites which are accessible by everyone. Also full details will be on display at all forthcoming events which we attend. One hundred years ago life was very different from today. Many of the lads who went off had just left school or were in their first job – they were butcher's boys, assistant tailors, shop assistants, farm workers, miners, others were married with young families, they were from all walks of life but together they stood tall and went off to fight for their Country. Some families lost as many as four or five sons, here in Ross there were four sets of brothers. We cannot imagine the heartache this caused but everyone was so very proud of them and you only have to be present on Remembrance Sunday to know that they will never be forgotten. As members of the Royal British Legion we are honoured to remember them and all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice during the last 100 years.
