THE discovery of a suspected Second World War bullet saw an Army bomb disposal team race from Tewkesbury to Ross-on-Wye on Friday after the alarm was raised by police.
Reports said a 1940s bullet had been unearthed in the Lakeside Drive area, but the bomb squad said “at no time was there any danger to local residents”.
An Army statement said: “We can confirm that a team from the Army’s 721 Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Squadron was called out by Herefordshire Police to an address in Ross-on-Wye today (Friday, July 2).
“The item of ordnance was safely removed from the site.
“At no time was there any danger to local residents and we thank the public for their patience.
“We always advise the public that if they inadvertently disturb what they believe to be live ordnance, they should contact their local police force as a matter of urgency.”
721 EOD Squadron operate out of St Barbara’s Barracks in Ashchurch on the outskirts of Tewkesbury.
They are part of 11 EOD and Search Regiment Royal Logistic Corps, which is the Army unit responsible for dealing with improvised explosive devices (IODs) and munitions disposal.
