Dear Editor,

I refer to Anthea MacIntyre’s letter regarding EU legislation and her comment on the Insurance Distribution Directive which she argues is helpful as it allows the consumer to see how much commission is included in Insurance quotes.

I couldn’t help but wonder at what cost this legislation had for such minor benefit. Anthea MacIntyre may be more wary of mentioning another piece of EU legislation that has just been passed; namely Directive 2001/95EC that states that candles must now be sold with an instruction manual. It took 23 official and 10 committee meetings to come up with this latest gem. You couldn’t make it up. Is it their take on the famous Two Ronnies fork handles sketch?

The independent think tank Open Europe calculate that the cost to the British economy of EU legislation is now over £33 billion per year. This is a cost our country can well do without. We do not need the EU to make our laws as we have our own organisation that has done that successfully for hundreds of years - our Westminster Parliament.
