ROSS Golf Club's Spring Scratch & Handicap Medal event took place recently with 130 members taking part in this, the first of the three qualifying competitions. From this the top 16 players will qualify to take part in a knock-out, which will ultimately decide the Men's 2010 Club Champion.

Local Ross youngster, Nick Ellis, who plays off a handicap of 2, confirmed his status as the Club's current top performer with an impressive gross 73 score to win the gold medal.

Another of the Ross Club's fine young players, Alex Bain, a 5 handicapper, came close with a gross 74. In 3rd place was the Club's A Team Captain, Steve Wallbank, also 5 handicap with a gross 76. Jason Bolton with a gross 76 will have been pleased with his performance as would Robert Beavis and Junior Ross Jenkins with gross 77's. In the handicap Division Gareth Vincent, a 12 handicapper, continued his excellent run of form to win with a nett 67 followed by Mark Button, Stan Beale, Alex Bain and Paul Ford all with nett 69's. Mark Whitmore, Peter Metcalfe, Mike Rothwell and Michael Lawrence all impressed with nett 70's.

Another well supported Trophy event was the Club's Annual Mixed Pairs Anniversary Foursomes Rose Bowl, established in 2003 to celebrate the Ross Club's 100th birthday. Organiser Jean Ovens, was delighted and appreciative of the co-operation of Course Manager, Rob Wilband, which meant that the Course was able to withstand the weekend rainstorms which became a real threat at one stage.

This partner's drawn competition brought together Margaret Davis and Richard Topping, who were both playing in the event for the first time.

With 26 points after completion of 14 holes of their round and heading for a reasonable total, what turned into a Trophy winning score was their massive 13 points achievement on the final 4 holes. This meant that their highly creditable 39 stableford points score was always likely to make them Trophy winners and this proved to be the case enabling Margaret and Richard to book their place at the Club's Prize-giving Presentation evening in September. Heather Fearnside and Brian Clouder were runners-up with 35 points and the 3rd spot was taken by Kay Cotton and Bill Day with 34 points.
