Last Saturday, 17 of John Kyrle High School's finest athletes from Years 9 and 10 competed at the County Athletics Championships in Worcester. In appalling conditions, the athletes had to battle against the elements to try and gain a place in the County Squad for next weekend's Mason Trophy competition – one step away from English Schools Trials!

The event was sadly abandoned at 2pm on safety grounds (as most of the facility was underwater!) leaving many of the John Kyrle athletes unable to compete in their events.

Despite this setback, several athletes did do enough through the morning to gain selection. In the Long Jump, Luke Clarke won gold (5m 45cms) with Jon Evans in third (5m 25cms) and in the High Jump, Ellie Osborne Ford jumped 1m 40cms to gain a silver. In Discus, Charlotte Fishwick came second in the inter girls' competition (20m 89cms) with James Maisey finishing third in the inter boys' event. George Hemingway also qualified for the junior boys' discus despite his event being cancelled on the day, due to a personal best throw of 35m 18cms, as did Amber Probyn in the junior girls' long jump.

Those selected will now travel to Stoke next Saturday to try and gain English Schools' qualification times and distances, and everyone at John Kyrle wishes them the best of luck.
