THE grandson of a former Commonwealth Games and European sprint medallist has just broken the U17 and U18 Welsh records for shot put with a throw of 18.27 metres.

Ross teenager Lachlan Robbie – who is coached by former Commonwealth shot putter and Olympic bob sleigher Adele Nicoll – finished his throwing season first in the UK for U17 shot and second U18 behind Lawson Capes, the grandson of famous strongman Geoff Capes.

The upcoming star is the grandson of former John Kyrle teacher Berwyn Jones, who starred on the track for Wales and GB and later played professional rugby league with Wakefield Trinity and Bradford Northern, winning three Lions caps.

Welsh sprint record breaker Berwyn's greatest claim to fame came as a member of the Anglo-Welsh sprint relay team dubbed 'The Jones Boys', who equalled the world 4x110 yards record at London's White City in 1963 beating the mighty USA.

The sprint ace, whose wife Ann also taught at John Kyrle, also collected Wales and GB relay bronzes at the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth and the Europeans in Belgrade the following year, when he also won the British AAA’s 100-yard crown, before turning to rugby league in 1964.
