Goodrich ‘B’ashers were looking forward to playing their penultimate match at home against Boughton Park Ladies on Sunday, August 4th.
First pair, Jill Brown and Katie Hunt, got off to a slow start dropping the first set 2-6, but with a few tweaks to their game they were able to level the rubber by winning the second set 6-4.
The third set was a tense affair, with service breaks going against both teams, but then Jill and Katie were able to get the upper hand with some accurate lobs and volleying from both players to take the set 6-3. Meanwhile second pair, Wendy Jenkins and Kirsten Mathews, stuck to their winning format taking their first rubber, 6-0 /6-0, although the score line did not reflect a true picture of the match as there was some very competitive rallies and deuce points that were closely contested.
At the changeover, Jill and Katie, now playing the Boughton Park second pair, quickly got back into their stride and were able to wrap up the second rubber in straight sets, 6-1 / 6-3.
Wendy and Kirsten also won their rubber in straight sets, 6-1 / 6-2, which included some very precise serving by Wendy and nifty interceptions by Kirsten. The ‘B’ashers are in a strong position at the top of Division 5 of the H & W Summer league with one match to play on Sunday, August 18th at home to Bodenham, and are looking to secure promotion.
