There was a very hard fought ’battle of the castles’ tennis match on Sunday, October 20th, when Goodrich A took on Ludlow A in Division 3 West of the H & W Winter League, at Ludlow.

In the first round Goodrich first pair, Cheryl Mordecai and Stephanie Howell, got off to a slow start but managed to secure the first set 6-4, and once warmed up finished off the second set 6-2 against a tricky Ludlow first pair.

Meanwhile there was an epic battle taking place on the other court between the two second pairings.

Ludlow took the first set 7-5, and Goodrich took the second set on a tie break. After two hours and 30 minutes Ludlow eventually took the final set 6-2.

Although it was one rubber apiece going into the second round, Goodrich had a slight advantage of having picked up a set, but could not afford any slip-ups.

The length of time on court seemed to tell in this round as Cheryl and Steph cruised through 6-1 / 6-3. Cath and Rachael, the Goodrich second pair, fought hard but just failed to take their rubber to a third set again, and lost 1-6 / 6-7. With the match at  two rubbers each the vital set taken by Cath and Rachael in the first round secured the winning draw for Goodrich, and a great start to the winter season.

The next match for the Goodrich A team will be on Sunday, 27th October at 11.00am, when they will host Kempsey A.  For more information about Goodrich Tennis Club,  please contact: [email protected] or visit the website: www.goodrichtennis.co.ukDigital Edition now.
