NEWENT 1st XI suffered a heavy 204-run defeat at home to Gloucester AIW Sports on Saturday.

The visitors' third man Shaheer Raja balsted 108 retired not out while opener Ali Khalid scored 80 as they racked up a daunting 324-5 off 40 overs.

James Towner took two wickets for 34 off five overs, and Andrew Duggan, Liam Davies and Sam Watts one apiece at Three Ashes.

But Newent never threatened the giant target in reply, all out for 120 in the 37th over, opener Jack Cowles their top scorer with 28, with Neil Roche (23), Tom Devries (16) and Duggan (15) the others in double figures.

But Newent Lions roared away to Woodmancote 3rd, skittling the hosts for just 73 in 16.3 overs before dashing off the runs in 12.2 overs.

Liam Malone was destroyer in chief, taking five wickets for 18 runs off 3.3 overs, backed by Ollie Curtis with three for 18 off five overs.

Newent's reply faltered at the start, Jay Scott dismissed for a duck and Ollie Corston out for five.

But 47 not out from third man Luke Merchant put any jitters to bed, guiding them over the line to 76-3.

Newent's Twenty-20 Gloucester Evening League team were downed by Arcadians Nine Elms though, losing by five wickets.

The hosts reached 121-6 off their 20 overs, Ollie Corston with 35, skipper Jack Griffiths 28, George Bennion 19, Jamie Wood 15 and Gary Smeaton 12.

But it wasn't enough, as Arcadians made it to 122-5 with 2.5 overs to spare, Charlie Edgell with two wickets, and Ben Allard, Ben Ward and Wood one apiece.

Elsewhere, Fownhope Strollers 1st XI lost by 124 runs at Woolhope, all out for 206 chasing a target of 330-8 off 45 overs,

Ben Boswell, Alex Carter and Nick Terry took wicket braces for the visitors, while Alex Bromhead scored 51 not out, backed by George Wood-Cole 35, Richard Lerego 26, Adam Evans 24 and Carter 23.
