Ross-on-Wye 2nd XI entertained Colwall 4th XI On Saturday, May 27th. As both captains went out to the middle to make the toss, neither of them would have expected what was about to happen. On winning the toss, stand in Ross skipper, Stuart Mair, asked Colwall to bat first. The Ross opening bowlers of Cameron Hill and Masud Ahmed soon found their line and length and made it very difficult for the Colwall opening batsman to score freely.
With the score on ten in the fourth over, Ahmed claimed the first wicket of the match when he clipped the very top of Smith’s (1) off stump. Four balls later Ahmed clean bowled Lewis for a duck.
Not to be outdone, Hill then uprooted the middle stump of Humphrey for another duck. In the eighth over, Paul Morris was introduced into the attack and he not only maintained the pressure on the batsman but also took three wickets in his short spell.
In fact, the only Colwall batsman to offer any type of defiance to the Ross bowlers was opening batsman, Phil Steer (19), until he was trapped LBW by Wayne Husbands, who then claimed the last Colwall wicket when he cleaned bowled Smith for the fifth duck of the innings and the visitors ended just 30 all out having batted for less than 19 overs.
All the Ross bowlers deserve a lot of credit for the tight lines that the figures made for excellent reading. Cameron Hill finished with 1-12, Ahmed 2-6, Morris 3-3, Clive Jones 1-6 and Husbands 2-2.
After a short interval, Ross opening batsmen, Mair and Ahmed strolled to the crease, Ahmed immediately took 18 runs off the first over and the ten wicket victory was completed when Mair hit the winning run from the fourth ball of only the third over.
Next up for Ross 2nd XI is an away game at league leaders Bosbury. After this emphatic win the team will go into the game with a lot of confidence.
