Ross travelled to Brierley Hill to play Oldswinford & Stourbridge Social CC at the weekend and chose to bat upon winning the toss. Hopes of a win gradually faded despite several good performances from the Ross players.
Openers Stu Mair and Angus McIntyre made a steady start against the seam attack and took the score to 29 before McIntyre fell for 13.
OSS then introduced the wily slow left armer Michael Robertson into the attack and his flight and guile on the slow spongy wicket had all the batsmen in trouble.
Robertson had already taken two wickets before Mair chipped to mid-on for 22 and, thereafter, only Tony Leslie 25 and Richard Jeffryes 21 played with the defensive assurance whilst also keeping the scoreboard moving. Robertson, aided by six catches ended with a career best 8-47 from 15 overs as Ross totalled just 111.
Ross needed a strong start in the field but were immediately out of luck as opener Spooner lived up to his name by top edging twice into gaps in the field inside the first three overs. Lizzie Jeffryes did take an early wicket before Harry Friend accounted for the dangerous Ahmed, both courtesy of catches by Angus McIntyre.
Milner then drove Charlie Cole straight to Wayne Husbands before Spooner (43) departed to a catch by Keith Flitton off of McIntyre. Harry Friend then won a leg before decision and an unlikely Ross victory was still a slight possibility. OSS advanced cautiously to 96-5 before heavy rain, thunder and lightning forced the players off for the best part of an hour but the sunshine returned to enable the hosts to finally complete their five wicket victory.
