On the baking hot May Day Bank Holiday evening, Ross-on-Wye Cricket Club’s Under 15s got their season off to a winning start at Colwall.
For many of this team, 2018 will be the last season of junior cricket in the Herefordshire League. The side has been kindly sponsored by Now Storage this year, promoting their self storage site at Jays Green, just off the M50 J3.
Ross Captain Adam Davies was asked to field first by Colwall, and gave the ball straight to Chloe Tingle, after her fine bowling performance for the Ross first team two days earlier. Chloe struck in the first over, taking a simple return catch to claim the first of three wickets, finishing with fantastic figures of 4-2-2-3; a fine reward for accuracy and consistency.
With the score at 12 for three, Adam Davies took the opportunity to use a variety of bowlers. Cale Thurston broke a promising fourth wicket partnership, enticing Colwall’s best batsman Bruno Recordan to loft a catch to the Ross Captain. Each of the remaining Ross bowlers; Alexander Springer, Ben Fletcher and Tai Minnie claimed a wicket, with the ever alert ’keeper Ali Cook finishing with two well taken stumpings.
The home team had reached 100 exactly, which Ross were confident of chasing.
The youngest member of the Ross side, Luke Timewell was asked to open with Davies, and scored two before playing across a straight ball to lose his stumps. After an uncharacteristically short innings from Ethan Lerego, Davies was joined by Rob Nixon at the crease. After the Colwall mid-off failed to take the catch from a powerful lofted drive from Nixon, the Ross pair never looked in danger; taking the run rate over eight-an-over to reach the target with nearly six overs to spare.
Adam Davies finished on 43, Rob Nixon striking a four down the ground from the last ball to reach 44.
Ross look forward to entertaining Eastnor next week, and then taking on Monmouth Cricket Club in the EFL Cup.
