Wormelow 1st XI welcomed Old Vigornians 1st XI to Kennelfield looking to bounce back from some disappointing recent results. Skipper Tom Cutler won the toss and had no hesitation in asking the visitors to bat first.
An early run out from debutant George Mann got the home side’s efforts off to a good start. Luke Sparrow (2-37) and Ali Main got amongst the wickets early, Sparrow aided by two Matt Evans slip catches, as Old Vigornians were reduced to 41-4.
When Mann (2-19) and Matt Deem (1-22) picked up wickets during their impressive spells all was looking good for the hosts with the scoreboard showing 107-7. There was then a change of momentum as wicket keeper Campbell-Ferguson (69no) batted well with the tale to guide the visitors to a competitive 190-9 from their 50 overs. Main (2-38) and Cutler (1-56) picking up the last couple of wickets for the home side.
Wormelow were looking for a solid platform in their run chase but the score had reached just 19 when they lost opener Richard Stafford (12) who had looked in very good touch. Wickets then began to fall on a regular basis and Wormelow soon found themselves in a spot of bother when they were reduced to 52-5 in the 26th over, this included the big wicket of Deem who had departed for 20.
Wickets continued to fall before a little resistance from number 9 Ali Main, who hit a quick fire 21 from 19 balls before he was the last man out in the 41st over with the score on 100. Wormelow falling 90 runs shorts of their target.
Next week they travel to Droitwich Spa where they will look to pick up their second win of the season.
