Wormelow 3rd XI hosted Herefordians at Kingstone High School on Saturday, June 23rd. The match marked the 500th appearance for Wormelow stalwart Derek Porter who made his first appearance for the club in June 1966.
Home skipper Dan Hale lost the toss and his side were asked to bowl first. The early indications were that it was a decent toss to lose as young seamer Oliver Langford (3-30) knocked over 3 of the Herefordians top 4 batsmen.
Things got even better for Wormelow when Jake Edmonds, on his first appearance of the season, picked up the 4th wicket of the day aided by a catch from keeper Porter. Herefordians were in a spot of bother with the score 32-4.
A partnership of 84 for the 5th wicket between T Childs and I Saunders (16) proved to be pivotal in the context of the game. The partnership was finally ended by Dan Hale (1-34), Josh Hale (1-25) picked up the sixth wicket of the day. Edmonds returned to blow away the tale as he picked up the last 4 wickets all clean bowled, last man out was Childs who departed for a superb 98. Edmonds finished with the outstanding figures of 5-22 from 8.3 overs, the Herefordians innings closing on 173 in the 35th over.
Wormelow suffered a couple of early blows in their run chase as the dismissals of Jon Herderschee (0) and Chris Stonadge (0) saw them 0-2. Langford and Dennis Hohne looked to get things back on track and there were positive signs before Langford was well caught on the leg side for 10.
Wickets continued to fall regularly and the home side were soon in big trouble with the score 31-7. Some fireworks from Edmonds, who hit four boundaries in his 24 from 16 balls, added some respectability to the score. Hohne (16) was the 9th wicket to fall with the score on 67 and unfortunately there were no late heroics from Porter (1) on his landmark day, as he was the last man to be dismissed with the score on 74.
A 99 run defeat for Wormelow against the reigning league champions.
