Despite being without a number of first team players, Juniors showed how strong their squad is with a very comfortable, routine victory. Their second in two weeks after their 14-1 victory against Broadleys. See page 27 for the report of that match.
On a hot day in Hereford, Ross made light work of the Holmer Athletic team, despite the poor playing surface, Ross did their best to play their short passing game.
Ross started slowly and it took 15 minutes before they put together a meaningful attack. Stand in front man Del Boy Brooke played a lovely through ball to the busy Luke Gray, who brushed off the attentions of the defender, to narrowly shoot wide. It looked for all the world as if it would nestle in the bottom hand corner, but Gray did not have to wait long for the chance to atone. After a precise goal kick from Alex Goode, Harry Hall produced a lovely flick to put Luke through. He finished in style with the outside of his foot, 1-0.
The defence of Rob McAfee, Sam Loftus, Matt Davies and Andy Francis were rarely tested. When they were, it was a long ball pumped aimlessly up field.
Despite having all of the play and central midfielders, Luke Mayo and Chris Davies dominating the ball, Ross struggled to make any clear cut chances.
It was not until a corner from Ben Hall that the keeper would be tested again. After a knock down, Matt Davies fired in a left footed shot through a crowded penalty area to which the Holmer keeper produced a very good save to keep the score at 1-0.
The second half started in much the same way, with Ross dominating possession without creating a lot. Luke Mayo came closest with a strike that just went over the bar. On 65 minutes Ross made the game safe when the tireless Luke Gray, looked up to see Ben Hall in the centre of the six yard box. Hall applied the finish. Not for the first time this season Gray and the keeper were having their own personal battle, with the keeper making some good saves. Gray had the last laugh, as he raced through to side foot the ball into the net to make it 3-0.
There was still time for Luke Mayo to shoot just wide from 40 yards after a suspect kick out from the keeper. Another clean sheet for Juniors and a place in the next round.
Eagle Inn man of the match went to Luke Mayo who controlled the midfield from start to finish, despite the unpredictable surface. It is back to the Sports Centre next week with Ross Juniors entertaining mid table division North side, Bell in the quarter finals. Kick off is 11am and fans new and old are welcome.
