Newent Town are looking for a new head coach after the departure of Andy Bevan.

The club announced that they were looking for a replacement on Sunday following a 3-2 midweek home defeat to Southam United and wished him all the best after a 14-month tenure.

Looking to bounce back from a humbling 8-0 loss at Wildsmith Meadow five days earlier to Milford United, the Daffs made a positive start on Wednesday night in near Baltic conditions, Frank Pemberton sneaking in at the far post to put them 1-0 up early on.

Saul Thomas then had a shot tipped wide before the visitors had a shot blocked and pushed out for a corner.

But the visitors were level after 15 minutes, Ethan Ryan Champkins slotting home, and went close again 10 minutes later with a header going just over.

Newent pushed back though, and a corner created a goalmouth scramble, which was blocked on the goal line, and then forced home by Jordan Cooper.

The Daffs then thought they had a penalty when Zaqib Hussain caused chaos down the left and was bundled over in the box, but play was waved on.

It was 2-1 to the Daffs at half-time, and they began on the front foot after the restart, Fin Jones earning a yellow card after colliding with the Southam keeper.

Daffs keeper Kyran Edwards then denied Joshua Dixon at the other end, only for the striker to follow up and find the net for 2-2.

Hussain then burst through one-on-one with the keeper to win it, but somehow the keeper saved.

At the other end, Edwards saved twice but was beaten at the third attempt by Saints skipper Simon Barby, who scored the visitors’ 250th goal since the Warwickshire club was relaunched three years ago.

A free-kick 25 yards out gave the Daffs hope, but the shot was tipped over the bar before a last minute goalmouth scramble saw Southam clear their lines.

At the weekend nearly all games were frozen out by the weather, including Ross Juniors’ North Gloucestershire Division Two table top derby clash at Longhope.

But Premier Division leaders Lydbrook Athletic played at Westbury United, winning 4-1 thanks to a Mike Donaldson brace and goals from Ryan Wilks and Blaine Smith, stretching their lead at the top to seven points.
