Goodrich ‘D’ie Hards were playing at home to Woolhope ‘C’ in Division 6 of the H & W Summer League on the evening of Thursday, July 18th and making their debut appearances for Goodrich were mother and daughter, Sue and Rachel Russell.

First pair, Sue Harley and Sue Russell, playing together for the first time, won their first rubber 6-2 / 6-3, and hot on their heels was the other new partnership of Rachel Russell and Karla Morris, also winning their rubber 6-2 / 6-1.

At the change, over the two Sue’s again rattled off the games with plenty of volleys and smashes coming off their rackets in confident style.  They won their second rubber 6-4 / 6-0, giving them chance to cheer on their team mates who were locked in a much tighter match against Woolhope’s first pair. Having taken the first set 6-1, Rachel and Karla then faced some fierce resistance from the opposition and conceded the second set 2-6.  Now in a third set battle and the game score level at 6-6 it was time for a tie-break, which eventually went the way of Woolhope.

Overall this was a great win for the ‘D’ie Hards, earning them a valuable eight points, and with three more matches to play they will be looking to move up the division. Their next match, on Wednesday, July 24th, is at home to Wellington. For more information about Goodrich Tennis Club, please contact: [email protected] or visit the website: www.goodrichtennis.co.ukSee the full story in this week’s edition of the Ross Gazette, or subscribe to our online edition here
