Weston Athletic were in action on Saturday in the quarter finals of the Geo Sandoe Cup when they travelled to face Milkwall Reserves. After a hard fought game in tough conditions Weston came away with a 3 – 1 victory, with two goals coming from striker Wes Downing.
Managers Dan Morris and Paul Burnham made a couple of changes to the team from last week's game. Shaun Aston came back in to defence alongside Wayne Husbands and Paul Burnham, Luke Beard filled in at left wing back with Liam Parry taking up the right hand side. Steve Kittner played the anchor role in midfield just behind Dave Nicholls and Jack Bray, with Wes Downing and Eli Wooding up front. Weston played the first half into a strong wind, which caused problems when the ball was in the air. However, Weston did start a lot stronger than the home side and played some really good football even in the tough conditions with a heavy pitch.
The first goal came after only ten minutes, Parry found space on the right and played a excellent first time cross into the middle for Wes Downing to finish expertly into the bottom corner. Weston continued to dictate play and always seemed dangerous going forward, however they could not find the second goal. Disaster struck for Weston on 30 minutes, when a long ball from the back was not dealt with by Burnham, which allowed the home side's midfielder to finish well past Morris in goal to tie up the scores at 1 – 1, which is how they stayed until half time.
Weston were forced into a change at half time with the injured Husbands being replaced by Alex Malsom.
Playing with the wind in the second half seemed to suit Weston and they played the majority of the second half in the opponents' half. Jack Bray in particular had one of his best games for the club. The tireless work of Downing and Wooding up front causing the home side's defence all sorts of problems, however Weston could not find the all important second goal, going close on numerous occasions. The goal which Weston deserved eventually came on 75 minutes, when Burnham curled in one of his trademark corners. This was the second time this season he has scored direct from a corner.
The home side pushed on trying to send the game into extra time, but they could not find a way past Aston, Malsom and Burnham, who all had an excellent second half. Weston killed the game in the 87th minute, when Bray made a brilliant break into the box, went past two defenders and then squared the ball to Downing, who once again finished well into the bottom corner from 12 yards, to complete the scoring, putting Weston 3 – 1.
Weston now face a two legged semi final against Staunton and Course to try and get to their first final since forming as a club. This week Weston are back to league action away against Harrow Hill Reserves with kick off at 2pm.
T R Yates man of the match – Jack Bray for his best game yet for the club.
