Ross Junior Mixed Badger Hockey Team played at home in Monmouth against Cirencester on Saturday and made up for the previous week’s defeat in spectacular style, winning 9-0.
The team has faced some atrocious weather conditions this season, but all paled into insignificance at this match, almost horizontal rain was beating down so hard it stung the flesh.
At times it was necessary to close the eyes due to the lashing they were receiving and raincoats were found to be superfluous for their primary function.
Even before the match started, coach Pete Jenkins found himself with a cornucopia of talent at his disposal and yet still made sure that everyone had a good lengthy stint on the pitch.
After the match it was overheard: “Any team has to win in difficult conditions but also learn and improve. The most pleasing thing for us is that we can see that happening and see what we have worked on in training coming through in matches. It’s been a great journey so far.”
As for the match itself; it was played at lightning pace with the ball flashing around the pitch despite the conditions. Most importantly for the Ross team it was often repeatedly being picked up from out of the opposition goal.
This was truly an exceptional match for a whole host of reasons that are unlikely to be repeated again anytime soon. But the Badgers are hoping that the weather doesn’t confront them in quite the same fashion again anytime soon either.
Captain for the day, Rory Calderwood decided that the award for South Hereford Motorcaravans player of the week should go to the entire team for not letting the previous week’s disappointment affect their style of play and overall commitment to excel.
Rory scored seven of Ross’ goals with Freddie Outbridge-Brock and Joseph Henry also scoring one apiece.
Ross now have a short break from competitive matches for the half term break, before returning on February 27th with an away trip to Stroud.
