After a lull of a few years, girl's football is beginning to have a revival in Ross. Ross Juniors already have a men's and an extensive Junior Section, a girl's section has now been formed.
The Sunday just gone saw Ross Juniors Girls enter an U10 team into the Herefordshire Girls Indoor Futsal Competition. The event took place at Point 4 in Hereford and saw the girls enter in a group of six teams. Futsbal is a 5 a-side variant of association football and is played on an indoor court with a ball with less bounce which encourages closer control and skills development. The games were eight minutes each with rolling subs, so were very quick and intensive affairs.
The Ross girls started brilliantly, considering prior to the event they had only ever played two friendly games. The first game saw the girls beat Pegasus 2-1 with goals from Meg and Hannah. The Pegasus manager commented afterwards on how well the girls had played against his side. The girls were then unlucky to lose to Lads Club Belles 2-1, hitting the post four times in the game, Hannah again continued her scoring streak with a well taken finish. The third game saw some fantastic goalkeeping from Ella who had an exceptional competition, the girls battled well and came close to scoring, in the end they lost 1-0 to Lads Club Tigers, who top the regular girls U10 league and are undefeated all season. Finally the girls finished off with a 1-0 win over Lads Club Bears, Captain Anna scoring the goal.
It was a great all round team performance, with Sophia, Emily and Bethany solid in defence, Meg covered much ground and her long shots were a constant danger. Anna and Hannah worked the opposition defenders tirelessly. The opposition coaches could not believe this was only Ella's second match in goal, her distribution and saves were excellent.
Alexis Lunn-Gadd, Girls development officer for the Herefordshire Football Association commented afterwards: "It was fantastic to have a team from Ross involved, the girls competed well and were a credit to themselves." The team had a couple of players absent are and are looking forward to the second of these completions in February and giving an even better account of themselves.
The girls start training again on Wednesday January 25th 6-7pm at JKHS sports hall. For next season the club are hoping to enter two teams in the girls league, one at U10 (at present school years 3 and 4) and one at U12 (school years 5 and 6). So if any girls are interested in joining please come along or phone Paul on 01989 762957. No previous experience is needed, just enthusiasm.
The club are also looking for sponsors and coaches so please call if interested.
