Luke Jones, the local road racer, was competing at Assen, in Holland, at the weekend in the MCE British Superbike Championship Round II and took his place on the winner’s podium at the end.
Luke, riding his Triumph 675 in the Supersport Class, had free practice on the Friday and finished the session in the afternoon as the quickest rider, with a time of 1.41.067.
Qualifying took place during Saturday morning for grid positions for the sprint race in the afternoon. Run over 12 laps, Luke was sixth quickest and was placed on the second row of the grid. Luke had a good start and was in fourth place on lap 5. But the rider in front of Luke got into trouble, came across and hit Luke’s front wheel which made Luke lose control and crash out.
Luke was on the third row of the grid for his second race on Sunday afternoon for the main race which should have been run over 18 laps. However, due to the weather conditions this was reduced to 12 laps. Luke was in third position on Lap 2 and moved into the lead by Lap 5, which he held onto until he reached the chequered flag and took his first win in the Supersport class.
His family and friends were thrilled and really pleased that Luke had secured a well-deserved win.
Luke is now in sixth position in the championship with 200 points. The next and final meeting is at Brands Hatch, October 14th to October 16th.
