This week saw Juniors host Misfits from Hereford. In windy conditions Juniors were determined to make amends for starting slowly in previous weeks leading up to this encounter. With barely half a minute played, Juniors opened the account with a well worked exchange between the two Lukes – Gray passed neatly to Mayo, for him to fire past the helpless Misfits keeper.
Within 20 minutes Juniors found themselves three goals to the good. The first was in similar style to the opener – the ball was whipped in tamely from wide but Rob McAfee got around the ball and kept it low for an 18 yard smash. For 3-0 it was Ted Loftus' turn to show what he had to offer. No one can deny this was the goal of the game, as he calmly struck over the Misfits goalkeeper from over 25 yards out in the most blasé of fashions. Tidy goal, tidy score line.
After a quiet spell up to the 35th minute, Juniors came alive again and succeeded in making it seven before the break. Luke Gray, from provider to goal scorer this time, with a low shot eased pass the keeper, a stonewall penalty conversion from the ever reliable Chris Davies, a lovely finish from Andy Francis after working tirelessly to break free, round the keeper and finish exquisitely into the Misfits net. Finally a Luke Mayo tap in coming about from more good work from Gray.
The second half started slowly, with the score line remaining at seven until the 55th minute when a well struck free kick from the wand of Chris Davies nestled snuggly into the Misfits net. From here on in was all about damage limitation for the away side and to their credit they fought hard in the latter stages to keep the goals to a minimum.
In the only moment of the game where the back three of Skipper Tom Burford, Liam Davies and Rob McAfee were caught snoozing, Misfits came within a whisker of a consolation goal, a well struck shot from 20 yards and with only the cross bar in the way to save Del Boy Brooks' blushes.
If it was game, set and match at 8-0, it was Championship and Grand-Slam by full time as an unfortunate own goal brought about from a penetrating run out wide from Mayo was rounded off by a last gasp goal from Alex 'Cameo' Goode to make the final score 10-0.
A spirited performance from Misfits but at no point was the outcome of this match ever in doubt.
The Eagle Inn man of the match was awarded to Andy Francis for the versatility man's tireless display. Juniors are at home tonight (Wednesday) against Goldvale. Come and support your local team, kick off 6:30pm.
