The Ross Juniors Under 11s welcomed Westfields to the sports centre on a glorious autumnal afternoon on Saturday, November 5th for a Bonfire Night fixture that may not have had fireworks but certainly didn’t disappoint as they won 4-3.

The home side started the match brightly and there were early chances for Eddie and Oli. They rode their luck as a ball across their six yard box was missed by all, and the Westfield’s player coming in at the far post couldn’t find the target.

Roo made a great save in the Ross goal, before Eddie put them ahead following good play from Harvey.

Ross weren’t ahead for long as they allowed a corner to bounce across their six yard box and go in, off a defender.

It was a well contested first half and the teams couldn’t be separated, although a blistering strike from Bill’s free kick forced the visitor’s keeper into a great full length diving save.

The second half was action packed. Bill came close with another free kick and Eddie brought a save from the keeper early on.

Ross deservedly went ahead when Jake played in Harvey on the left and he slotted the ball past the advancing keeper, and then could have won a penalty.

Westfields almost equalised from another corner, but Theo did well to clear the ball off the line before Ross went close when Jake’s free kick was cleared off the line and Oli followed up only to see his header strike the crossbar.

The home side’s pressure soon told as they were awarded a penalty when Eddie was pushed over in the area and Jake slotted the ball into the back of the net. Ross continued to pressure their opponents with Oli forcing their keeper into another save.

There seemed little danger as the match entered the last ten minutes, but a Westfields’ break lead to a penalty which they dispatched. With just minutes left, Westfields were awarded another penalty. This time, Roo saved it but the Westfields’ player knocked in the rebound.

With just two minutes left, Westfields were buoyed by their equaliser and the Ross boys were disappointed at being pegged back, but they didn’t let it show and got on with the attacking play that had seen them dominate the second half.

A good tackle and break from Blu on the right saw him shoot narrowly wide from the edge of the area. From the resulting goal kick Eddie robbed a defender of the ball and struck a sweet shot that beat the keeper and set off a great team celebration.

The Harley Finishings man of the match was Eddie Price for his tireless work for the team.
