Ross Juniors Colts under 9s played their third ever game, at the weekend, and played against Westfield.
The game followed a 3-2 victory in their first match, and being humbled 5-0 by Ross Juniors (a far more experienced and well established side) last week.
The team gathered on Saturday at the Ross-on-Wye Sports Centre, in near perfect football conditions. A good away crowd was present and the match began.
The early exchanges saw both teams have chances, but the bigger and more experienced opponents took the lead. A strong cross was deflected by one of the Ross defenders in to the net.
The Colts quickly went on the attack and Owen had a great shot, which was well saved by the excellent Westfield keeper. The resultant corner led to a break from which Westfield scored.
The tenacious Alfie made a great run, but the Colts could not find the net and Charlie (the stand-in keeper) made some great saves.
After some committed defending by Colts, Westfield were awarded a free kick which was powered in to the top left corner. At half time, the score was 3-0
Following a motivational talk from Paul, the team’s manager, and Paul, the coach, the Colts entered the second half not fearing their opponents, and a really committed performance followed.
William put a great shot just past the post and Alfie just failed to connect with a strong cross. The Colts were on top but Westfield scored against the run of play.
The final third of the match saw great commitment from the whole Colts team. They realised that although the other team were bigger and stronger, they were not unbeatable.
All the boys were fully committed and William struck towards goal only for the goalkeeper to make another outstanding save.
Westfield weathered the storm and kept a clean sheet, despite a number of goalmouth scrambles and searching corners put in by the excellent Todd. In the end, Westfield were pleased to hear the final whistle.
Although the Colts lost, their second half performance was much improved and the fans are all looking forward to the match this week.
