Ross Juniors Football Club entered two teams into the Herefordshire County Girls Futsal Tournament at Weobley.

Over two Sundays, the Ross teams, Juniors and Colts, battled it out against other girls sides from the county in the indoor format of the game. With a smaller pitch and a heavier ball the game is a perfect introduction into learning the skills of the beautiful game.

The Juniors were in group A and successfully negotiated their way through it with three out of three wins scoring 10 and conceding one to top their group. The Juniors have been undefeated all season in the Under 10 Sunday league and progressed as expected to the semi-finals.

The Colts, solely made up of younger year four girls, faced a challenging time with many of the teams they faced being a year older. The indoor format though seemed to suit them and against the form book they excelled, winning three out of three games scoring 10 and conceding 0 on the way to the semis.

The semis saw the Juniors play Hereford Lads Club Girls and the Colts play Hereford Lads Club Pumas. The Juniors looked a class above the opponents, goals from Cassie (2), Naomi (2), Lily and Macy gave them a 6-0 win against an experienced Lads Club team. Caitlin was excellent when called on and the defence of Matilda, Mica and Maddy were unbeatable all morning.

It was an excellent team performance which made a good opponent look very ordinary.

The Colts faced a strong Lads Club Pumas team who were fielding a much older and physical team. The Colts though exploded into action, Hannah, Amelie and Amy all withstanding strong challenges in the early stages. The goals then flowed with Hannah scoring a hat-trick very quickly, the Pumas had no answer. Izzy, Hazel, Alisha and Eva provided excellent defensive support ensuring the ball remained in Lads Club Puma’s half for most of the game. Eva added a fourth to make it 4-0 to the Colts, a result unimaginable pre-tournament.

The final is now on March 13th, it will be the first time ever that Ross-on-Wye has got both teams to the finals guaranteeing the Club the Cup.

The Under 8s and 14s have also made it to their respective finals and the Under 12s have one more round of fixtures to see if they can make it a full set for the girls in Ross. The Under 16s are doing well in their Gloucestershire League and with the Women’s team about to play their second fixture, football for females in Ross is blossoming.
