Ross-on-Wye Juniors Men went to local rivals Weston on Saturday and came away with a close result but still 5 - 4 winners.
Ross started the game really well and was soon 1 - 0 up after five minutes, after a through ball from Jack to set up Dave Nicholls to strike a brilliant 25 yard screamer into the top corner. Nicholls seemed to have his shooting boots on as minutes later another strike from outside the box went just wide of the post.
The second goal saw Luke Harris tap in from close range after the Weston keeper blocked a powerful shot off Callum McCulloch. The game went quiet for a while but Ross seemed in control and had the edge over their opponents. Weston pulled one back before the half time interval despite the efforts of unfamiliar pairing of Ben Gardner and Billy Jenson at cb, 2 - 1.
The second half started with sub, Jaime Jones, coming on for Jennings, which meant lb Kristian Milnes got pushed up onto the wing. After 55 minutes, and with some tidy football from defender, Shaun Aston, and midfield trio, Jack Bray, McCulloch and Nicholls, Ross was awarded a free kick.
The ball got played to striker, Tom Peachey who headed back to on coming Nicholls to make way for a one on one with the keeper to hit low into the bottom corner. Peachey was soon rewarded with a goal after a through ball from McCulloch which the striker calmly slot past the keeper, 4 - 1. Second sub, Wayne Husbands, came on for Luke Harris but, after some confusion over players’ positions, Weston capitalised and scored two in quick succession. Husbands moved into the back line to push Jenson up into midfield and went on a run with the ball which ended up at Milnes’ feet to cross back to Jenson for him to fire home and make it 5 - 3. Weston made it a nervey last 10 minutes for Ross as a misunderstanding between cb Husbands and Gardner let in the Weston striker to make it 5 - 4.
Rub a Dub Dub Man of the Match went to Tom Peachey and Shaun Aston for countless chances created. Ross are away on Saturday to Ranks 2pm KO.
