THE Athletico Ross-on-Wye Walking Football Club recently travelled to League champions, Leominster for a friendly game that proved to be quite difficult but resulted in a 1-0 win.
Games have always been close between the two clubs and Ross dominated the first half with David Rooke, Alan Essex and Ric Casstles probing and controlling the midfield. However, there was nothing to show for it by the end of the first half.
In the second half, Leominster took the upper hand but failed to test keeper, David Spray, for the whole match due to the solid defensive work of David Fish, Greg Weston and skipper, Nick Morgan.
A quick breakaway saw debutant, Peter Horrocks, hit a forceful cross-shot to settle the game 1-0 to Athletico Ross. This was a morale boosting result.
The club are excited to break new ground as six Ross players join four from Leominster to form ‘Team Herefordshire’ and travel to the Algarve to play in the Olhao International Tournament.
They will be playing multiple English teams, including Ipswich and Shrewsbury, but will also have the opportunity to play teams from Portugal and Spain.See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
