Ross Mens football team travelled to Ranks Outsiders in Steam Mills on Saturday, October 21st. Ross wanted to try get their season back on track in the league with a result here, after going out of the Herefordshire county cup and losing their first game of the season. This they achieved with a 2-1 win but it was a hard fought victory.
The weather when the game started was not bad, but conditions soon took a turn for the worse. It was very windy and rain storms made the first half not the greatest to play football in, but it was the same for both teams and neither were able to get a grip of the game.
Both teams had chances but to no avail. Ross did what they needed to do to keep that clean sheet and waited for a break-through
At half-time the team talk tried to get Ross players geared up for second half to get that early goal and try edging it.
It didn’t take long for the goal to come because on 50 minutes Callum McCulloch ended up with the ball on the edge of the box to fire it hard and low. The Ranks’ defender cleared it for it to end up at the feet of striker Tom Peachey who was able to slot it home and get Ross in front 1 - 0.
Ross needed bit of composure for the next five to 10 minutes but the Ross defence of Wayne Husbands, Dan Irvine, Adrian Robertshaw was caught off guard by the Ranks’ attack and they ended up putting the ball past keeper Aaron Thorley. Ross made a substitution, with Dave Nicholls coming on for Liam Parry to sit in the middle.
Ross started to make few more chances with Paul Wooding having one cleared off the line but the score stayed at 1 - 1.
Ross made their last two changes with 20 minutes to go with Luke Harris coming on for Billy Jenson and Jaime Jones on for Brad Wooding. This meant pushing Robertshaw into the middle and Nicholls further forward. Ross started being more on the attack, trying to get that winning goal.
It didn’t take long for Robertshaw to find Jack Bray with loads of space down the wing, catching the Ranks’ defender napping, He crossed an inch perfect ball to Nicholls in the box to smash past the keeper to make it 2 - 1.
Ross just needed to hold on till the final whistle, which they did.
Wye Commercials Ltd Man of the Match went to Paul Wooding for his performance in midfield. On Saturday Ross travel to Longhope to play in the Geo Sandro Cup. 2.30ko.
