Pupils at Walford Primary School are passionate about sport and were thrilled to receive the Sainsbury’s School Games Silver Award for the second year running. The School Games is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people. It is made up of four levels of activity: competition in schools, between schools and at county level.
Pupils, Hugo Lawson and Michael Nixon, members of the School Council, were delighted to accept the award on behalf of the school. Hugo, aged 10 years, said, “Everyone at school feels very proud to have this award because we all love sport and our Walford Sport Crew members organise lots of great events throughout the year for everyone to take part in.”
Michael Nixon, also aged 10 years, said “At Walford, we get many opportunities to try lots of different sports. At the moment, we are really enjoying learning to play golf with expert coaches from Tri-Golf.”
Headteacher, Louise George told the Ross Gazette, “Younger pupils are being taught the basics of the game in a safe and fun manner, using plastic clubs and foam balls. All of the children love these golf sessions and are really looking forward to moving away from the foam balls to the real thing by the end of the course.”
The end goal for Tri-Golf sessions is not only to introduce golf to as many children as possible but it is also to grow participation in the sport as a whole. The children, who are learning how to play golf today, will be the future of the game and it is important, as it is in any sport, to get children involved and get them enjoying it.
