Ross Juniors started the New Year in style with an impressive 3:2 win away at Shrewsbury.
The venue was the National Sports Centre in Lilleshall, the place where England trained before the 1966 World Cup Final. The famous surroundings seemed to inspire the boys who took the lead after just three minutes when Jordan shot and scored. Shrewsbury took a while to wake up, but brought the scores level on the quarter hour and soon started to put the Juniors on the defensive.
Despite the pressure Ross held their ground and were soon back in front, Josh P creating the goal with a strong run down the left before Luke finished to make the score 2:1.
Early in the second half Ross extended their lead, this time Jordan was the playmaker; finding Joel in the box who calmly put the ball away. Shrewsbury are a strong, well organised team and pushed hard to get back into the game, forcing several fine saves from Josh in goal. Finally the home team pulled a goal back and then pressed for an equaliser, but the Ross defence, especially Freddie, Elliott and Will, showed grit and determination, and despite some nervous moments, hung on for an excellent win.
This was another great team performance and moved the Juniors up to fifth in the Midland Junior Premier League, three points off the top with a couple of games in hand.
