Weston went through to the semi final of the NGL Pope Cup by beating Sling 4-0 at home on Saturday.

The weather was poor, with the wind gusting across the pitch and the occasional storm, this was not going to be a day for good football.

Weston started the brighter of the two teams with some good movement but the passes were being over hit to strikers and the wind kept taking the ball on to Sling’s goalkeeper.

The first goal was not long coming when Jack Wright opened the scoring with a well worked goal. Arron Sussons made it two with a shot that left the Sling goalkeeper stranded. The third goal was scored again by Jack Wright, who caused problems every time he ran at the Sling defence.

The ‘special goal’ could have come from a Hammer House of Horror’s film; goalkeeper Dan Morris, renowned for his kicking, had the ball in his hands on the edge of his penalty area, waiting for a heavy gust of wind he punted the ball up front. The wind took the ball all the way to Sling’s penalty box line, with the advancing goalkeeper wondering what was going on; he took too many steps out, before realising that the ball was going to drop over him into the net. With shouts of delight and shock all around, Dan was subject to the praise only given to an outfielder scoring a goal. The score remained the same for the rest of the half.

The second half was dominated by Weston, with Sling not causing too many problems, the back four of Alan Bain, Carl Roberts, Shane Bruton and Arron Sussons were solid. The middle five of Dan Rodda, Wes Parker (sick note) Darran Smith, Mike Harris and James Reid worked hard, with Danny suffering from cramp, Jack Wright from back problems and James Reid with a groin strain, they were replaced with Mike Maloney, Zac Neville and Paul Greenhill.

Before the game Weston welcomed back Mike Malony, who was presented with the players player of the season for 2014/15. The Dunbar Packaging player of the game went to Darran Smith, for showing his class and experience.
