The great thing about an event like the Ross 10K, featured in last week's Gazette, is that each participant has their own story.
14 year old Joseph Gilkes, from Coventry, won the Fun Run, last Sunday, for the second year running.Joseph is the nephew of Ross Gazette reader Dave Howley, of Kings Caple. Dave got in touch to tell us about Joseph, who turns out to be no ordinary 14 year old.
Dave said: "Joseph has recently returned from Canada where he represented England at the 47th International Childrens Games, held in Windsor Essex.
"He competed in the High Jump, Long Jump and 4x100m Relay. He reached the 'B' Finals in both High Jump and Long Jump and we, as a family, are tremendously proud of his achievements."
The International Children's Games is an International Olympic Committee-sanctioned event held every year where children from cities around the world and between the ages of 12 and 15 participate in a variety of sports. Since beginning in 1968, 37,000 children have been competed at 43 Summer Games and four Winter Games.
This year's event was contested by over 1500 young athletes from 40 countries and next year Lake Macquarie, Australia will host the games.
Dave said: "I felt it worthy of a mention in the Ross Gazette as, usually, young teenagers tend to get a bad press.
"Joseph is an unassuming, well mannered, dedicated, hard working young athlete and we wish him well for the future."
